Titan

Saturn’s hazy moon

Titan is Saturn’s largest moon. A thick golden haze surrounds it and hides the ground. Titan has an atmosphere even denser than Earth’s. Beneath the clouds are mountains, sandy dunes, rivers, and lakes. Does that sound familiar? But these lakes contain very cold liquids, including methane, rather than water.

Titan is so cold that water ice can be hard like rock. The Huygens probe floated down on a parachute and sent pictures from the surface. The Cassini spacecraft helped reveal shores and seas beneath the haze. By exploring this strange moon, scientists discover how different weather and landscapes can be in space.
